Barbara Ottevaere
Barbara Ottevaere is a Franco-Belgian-Canadian visual artist living and working in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. In 2023, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Concordia University with Great Distinction. In 2024, she was awarded the Irene F. Whittome Prize in Studio Arts, recognizing excellence in her studio practice.
While she frequently explores materials such as paper and cardboard, ceramics remain at the heart of her work. Her pieces have been selected by several juries and shown in group exhibitions. Her work is part of private collections in Canada, France, England, and the United States.
In search of a visual language where past and present blur, where dream and reality intertwine, Barbara Ottevaere harnesses the versatility of clay to create ceramic works that oscillate between sculpture and canvas. Under her hands, the material is transformed into a vessel for narrative. These fragments of story unfold through line, pattern, volume, and low relief.
Embracing the unexpected, her compositions often emerge from the chance cut of a blade or the trace of a tool. Barbara’s practice seeks to re-enchant the real—inviting us into a world where form and memory meet in poetic tension.
