Catherine Morin Presales

Catherine Morin is a painter residing and working in Montreal. Trained as a photographer, she has dedicated herself almost exclusively to painting for the past number of years.

Catherine conveys scenes which are as inviting as they are contradictive. The important and often exuberant presence of vegetation skilfully transports us to different implied contexts which are never designated: from the vast and sunny meadow to the dust-laden parlour, pool deck, tropical patio, or even a municipal campground. Morin blithely evokes glossy magazine editorials and celebrity features with her uncanny mastery of intrigue and mise-en-scène: thanks to her keen photographer’s eye, she often composes her large-scale paintings by bringing into play characteristically expressive treatments such as wide, reverse or close-up angles. In doing so, she lays the cornerstones of stories we then delight in inventing.

Catherine Morin’s art is not rhetorical: at her most piercing, she is full of humour; and at her most magnanimous, she reveals an exquisite tenderness.
